Oil Storage Violations
Los Angeles, CA: (May-07-08) California Attorney General Jerry Brown brought charges against Jiffy Lube Inc., alleging that the oil-change giant's franchisees weren't properly storing anti-freeze and motor oil. The suit was brought after state inspectors found the environmental laws violations, causing Brown and 12 counties to raise the ante on the company's environmental protection practices at its 300-plus locations in CA. Brown stated that some of the company's employees were not regularly inspecting their storage containers to prevent oil and antifreeze from spilling or leaking. State officials said that Jiffy Lube cooperated with investigators, handing over voluminous records to help with the proceedings.
As part of a settlement reached in the case, sources stated that under threat of litigation, Jiffy Lube Inc. has agreed to step up environmental protection at its facilities as well as pay $500,000 in civil fines and legal fees. Apart from the monetary payout, the company will launch a program to ensure that storage containers are in good working order to avoid spills and overflows.
