Golfer Loses Eye

Tampa, FL: (May-08-08) Gaylon and Mary Jones brought a lawsuit against the Westchase Golf and Country Club near Tampa, FL, and the golf course's management company, after a practice session resulted in Gaylon Jones's suffering permanent damage to his right eye. The suit stated that before the time they were supposed to start their round of golf, Jones and his friend proceeded to the driving range to hit some warm-up balls.

Sources stated that at Westchase Golf and Country Club, raised granite markers were used to separate each golfer and designate where they should tee their practice balls. Jones stated that he set-up between two markers, teed his ball adjacent to a marker and "toed" a driver. As it happened, the ball rebounded off the marker and struck Jones in his right eye. Records show that the injury led to the permanent loss and eventual removal of the eye. A starter at the club testified that before the accident, he warned the assistant professional that raised granite markers may look good, but were risky.

As part of a settlement reached in the case, the Jones settled the personal injury case with the club for $1 million in November 2007. [YAHOO FINANCE: FLORIDA LEGAL SETTLEMENT SHOWS GOLFERS AND COURSE OWNERS NEED TO BE CONCERNED WITH ON-COURSE SAFETY]
