Bicyclist Killed
Fort Myers, FL: (May-13-08) The family of Michael J. McIntyre, a 55-year-old bicyclist, filed a wrongful death lawsuit, after he was killed in a 2005 bicycle accident in North Fort Myers. The suit claimed that Russell Renney ran a stop sign and struck McIntyre, killing him. McIntyre was a Lee County School Board employee who had participated in a weight loss contest at work. His family said that though he had finished the contest, he still biked regularly.
Sources stated that Renney, who was charged with running a stop sign, represented himself in the case. Court papers indicate that his license was suspended for a year and he had to do community service and pay a fine. With regards to the wrongful death case, a jury awarded the family $5 million, resolving the lawsuit. [FAMILY OF BICYCLIST KILLED BY MOTORIST AWARDED $5 MILLION SETTLEMENT]
