Suicidal Patient
Fayetteville, AR: (May-14-08) The family of Judy Caldiero brought a wrongful death lawsuit against Vista Health and Dr. Lewis Britton, a Fayetteville psychologist, claiming that Caldiero was turned away, despite being suicidal, leading to her killing herself. The family stated that Britton recommended outpatient treatment for Caldiero instead of admitting her, even though she was suffering from depression and anxiety and was suicidal in late November 2005. Caldiero had been evaluated at Vista and the family was expecting she would be admitted. Sources said that her family wanted her placed in a residential treatment program.
Following her release, Caldiero committed suicide days later with a pistol she had bought at a pawnshop without the family's knowledge. Vista Health stated in its defense that Caldiero and her family had to bear some responsibility for her death because she had a plan to end her life but told family members and doctors she was not planning to kill herself. Sources familiar with the negotiations stated that the two sides resolved the wrongful death lawsuit with an undisclosed settlement. [THE MORNING NEWS: SETTLEMENT ENDS MEDICAL LAWSUIT TRIAL]
