Clergy Abuse
Los Angeles, CA: (May-15-08) A sexual molestation lawsuit was brought against the Salesian Society of Catholic priests, a Catholic order of priests that refused to join a record sex-abuse settlement between accusers and the Los Angeles Archdiocese, alleging that the order was aware that a priest had been accused of abusing children when they assigned him to a high school. It its defense, the Salesians denied the allegations, stating that the society was not aware the priest had abused anyone before assigning him to the school.
In a recent announcement, spokespersons said that the order had reached a $19.5 million settlement with the plaintiffs, resolving the claims against it. The money will be divided among 17 accusers. The society was the only religious order that would not join the $660 million deal the archdiocese reached with plaintiffs in 2007. [FOX NEWS: ORDER THAT SAT OUT L.A. ABUSE SETTLEMENT MAKES DEAL]
