Drug Pusher
New York, NY: (May-16-08) US Attorney Michael Sullivan's office brought a lawsuit against Biovail Pharmaceuticals Inc., a NJ, based subsidiary of Biovail Corp., alleging that the company illegally paid doctors so that they would prescribe Cardizem LA, a blood pressure drug. The suit alleged that Biovail Corp. paid thousands of physicians and others up to $1,000 each, to induce them to either prescribe or recommend Cardizem LA.
In a recent development, company spokespersons stated that the subsidiary agreed to plead guilty and pay a total $24.6 million to settle the federal criminal charges. Officials at Sullivan's office said the investigation did not implicate the current management of Biovail in the scheme. Both, the US Attorney's office and the Toronto-based pharmaceutical company announced the settlement separately. [CNN MONEY: DRUG MAKER SETTLES FEDERAL PROBE FOR $24.6 MILLION]
