Inmate Suicide
Oneida County, NY: (May-19-08) The family of Cail R. Williamson brought a wrongful death lawsuit against the county, after Williamson hung himself in the county jail in September 2003. The suit alleged negligence against both the county and CNY Services, which provides assessments of inmates shortly after they are admitted to the jail.
Records showed that Williamson was 17-years-old at the time of his death, and was a father of two. A student at Adirondack High School, Williamson had been jailed since Aug. 10, 2003 on charges of larceny and felony burglary, and was facing felony charges in Lewis County as well. Jail officials stated that Williamson, who gave his address as Boonville at the time of his admission, committed suicide by hanging himself. Following the incident, the county faced suits from the estate of the deceased man.
As part of a settlement reached, sources familiar with the negotiations stated that the county is offering $100,000 and CNY Services $125,000, to resolve the litigation brought on behalf of Williamson's estate. [ROME SENTINEL: COUNTY OFFERS $100,000 SETTLEMENT FOR INMATE SUICIDE]
