Misleading the Government
Washington, DC: (May-19-08) The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), brought charges against Edison Mission, an Edison International subsidiary, alleging that it mislead investigators. The suit was filed after a FERC investigation into Edison's wholesale electricity market bidding practices on the Northeast power grid, revealed that the company had made several representations and produced data and documents to staff over its supply offer strategy that misled federal officials.
As part of a settlement reached in the lawsuit, Edison Mission agreed to pay $9 million to resolve allegations. FERC officials stated that the grid, PJM Interconnection LLC, coordinates the power grid in 13 northeast US states and the District of Columbia and provides power for about 51 million people. They described the practice as an effort by Edison Mission to mislead agency investigators during the investigation, which the agency started in July 2005. The Boston-based Edison Mission stated that it will pay a $7 million civil penalty and spend about $2 million on a regulatory compliance program.
