Shell Oil Co. and The Federal Government agree to pay $35 million settlement in environmental damage lawsuit.
Denver, CO: (May-29-08) The state of Colorado brought a lawsuit against Shell Oil Co. and the US Federal Government, alleging that there was environmental pollution at the Army's former Rocky Mountain Arsenal on the outskirts of Denver. The suit stated that the Army opened the 27-square-mile arsenal in World War II and used it to make chemical warfare agents and incendiary munitions; and that a part of the site was leased in 1952 to Shell. The oil company allegedly made pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, and other chemicals there for nearly three decades. Colorado filed suit in 1983, alleging natural-resource damage, including contaminated groundwater. Records indicate that, in 1987, the arsenal, which is just west of Denver International Airport, was added to the Superfund program to clean up contaminated sites. Since then, part of the site has since become a wildlife refuge. As part of a settlement reached in the case, Shell Oil Co. and the federal government have agreed to a $35 million payout to resolve the nearly 25-year-old environmental damage lawsuit.
