Nassau, NY agrees to pay $215,000 settlement in wrongful death lawsuit.
Nassau, NY: (May-29-08) The estate of Eileen Tosner, a 73-year-old lady, brought a lawsuit against Nassau County, after a former psychiatric patient shot and killed Tosner, of Lynbrook, and a priest during a Mass in Lynbrook in 2002. County officials confirmed that the Nassau Legislature approved a $215,000 settlement with the estate of Eileen Tosner, resolving the wrongful death lawsuit. Following that, the Legislature unanimously banned the possession, sale or disposal of handguns painted to look like toys. Nassau Executive Thomas Suozzi said he pushed for a similar ban because such guns pose a danger to law enforcement and the public. County officials said that a year before the shooting, doctors at Nassau University Medical Center diagnosed that Peter Troy, the killer, suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. Nassau's Office of Mental Health was to have evaluated him for services, but the office closed the case after they couldn't find Troy. Court papers reveal that Troy is serving a life sentence for the killings.Nassau, NY in the News
