Safeway, Inc. agrees to pay nearly $2.8 million settlement in grocery store lawsuit.

Fairfield, CA: (Jun-12-08) A consumer protection lawsuit, filed against Safeway, Inc., has been settled according to the Solano County District Attorney's office. DA David Paulson announced Wednesday that his office, in conjunction with the DA's offices of Napa, Marin, Fresno, Santa Cruz and Sacramento counties, reached an agreement with Safeway, Inc. for $2.3 million in civil penalties, $289,551 to reimburse costs of the investigation, and $200,000 to "enhance governmental enforcement of construction, pricing and weighing cases." In addition, Safeway, Inc., who also operates Von's stores, will also offer a price guarantee of up to $5 if, at the time of purchase, a consumer is charged a price that is higher than the lowest advertised price for any item. The investigation arose out of complaints involving the construction and modification of the stores' hot and cold food service areas and also encompassed pricing and weighing accuracy issues in stores throughout the state.
