Texas A&M University Settles Bonfire Lawsuit for $2.1 Million
This is a settlement for the Wrongful Death lawsuit.
A decade old lawsuit against Texas A&M University has been settled for $2.1 million. The suit was filed by the families of 4 students who were killed and several others who were injured when a bonfire tower collapsed on campus in November 1999.
In total, the collapse of the bonfire tower killed 12 people and injured dozens. Following the collapse of the 59-foot tower, the university forbade any further building of bonfire towers on its property. Up until that point, it had been a tradition at the university, beginning in 1909.
In addition to the financial settlement, the university will have engineering oversight if it ever decides to allow future bonfires on campus.
