Mattel to Pay $12 Million to Settle Tainted Toys Investigation
Lead-tainted toys from China are going to cost the toy maker Mattel Inc $12 million in settlement monies to end an investigation by 39 states into lead-tainted toys. Additionally, the toy manufacturer has agreed to lower the acceptable level of lead in toys shipped to the states to 90 parts per million. The company was using the current federal standard of 600 parts per million. New Federal standards set to go into place next year stipulate 90 parts per million.
During the past year Mattel and its subsidiary, Fisher Price, have recalled over 21 million toys made in China.
