Bus Injury Victim Awarded $27.5 Million
A 45-year old woman who was hit by a bus and subsequently underwent amputation of her left leg has been awarded a $27.5 million settlement by a jury. Gloria Aguilar was hit by a city bus in 2005 as she was crossing the street in New York, and as a result of her injury has not been able to work since.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York plans to appeal the settlement, stating that it is excessive. However, in recent months there have been 3 similar personal injury suits brought against New York City Transit that have resulted in multi-million dollar settlements; one for $1.8 million, another for $2.3 million, and yet another for $7 million. All 3 victims had been injured by either subway cars or buses.
