Settlement Reached in Neurontin Suicide Suit
This is a settlement for the Wrongful Death lawsuit.
New York, NY: A wrongful death suit filed on behalf of a retired minister who committed suicide just two months after starting treatment with Pfizer's epilepsy medication, Neurontin, has reached settlement prior to going to trial. The details of the settlement have not been made public.
Neurontin was prescribed to Richard Smith by his doctor, in an 'off label' capacity - that is the drug was not approved for the indication for which Mr. Smith was being treated. In 2004, Pfizer's subsidiary, Warner-Lambert, pled guilty to allegations that it illegally marketed Neurontin, and paid a fine of $430 million.
Reportedly, Pfizer is currently facing over 1,000 lawsuits stemming from allegations of illegal promotion of Neurontin, and the drug's possible contribution to some suicides.
