Grandparents Pay $258K for Burning Baby
Harris County, TX: The case over a 9-year old who sustained third-degree burns while in the care of his grandparents has been settled, with the grandparents paying the mother $258,000.
The child, Jace Williams, was visiting his grandparents' at their house in 2007, when he touched a hot steam vaporizer. This resulted in his developing severe burns to the palm of his right hand. Several surgeries were required to remove scar tissue that developed from the burn and restore use of his hand, and the boy will require further surgeries as he grows.
Jace's mother subsequently sued the grandparents, Linda and Clarence Williams, alleging they were negligent in placing the vaporizer within Jace's reach despite knowing that it was extremely hot and posed a safety hazard. The Williamses argued that the vaporizer was left where it was by a third-party without their knowledge.
