Man Receives $750K Settlement in Excessive Force Lawsuit
This is a settlement for the Personal Injury lawsuit.
Orange County, CA: A $750,000 settlement was awarded to a man who claims he was beaten and repeatedly shocked with stun gun by Orange County Sherrif's deputies.
Mathew Fleuret sued the Sheriff's department and the county as a result of the incident, which happened in 2006. He was arrested during a bar fight. He claimed that while officers tried to break up the fight, he was sprayed with pepper spray, hit in the head with a baton and had his face smashed in the floor. He further contended that in the holding cell at the jail, he was slammed to the floor, pinned down by an officer's knee and stunned at least 11 times in 13 minutes. He said he sustained a concussion, a torn labrum and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder, all of which prevent him from returning to his job as a construction worker.
The defendants argued that the officers acted reasonably for the situation, but they agreed to the settlement before the case went to trial.
