Taser Brain Damage Suit Settled for $2.8 Million
This is a settlement for the Personal Injury lawsuit.
Santa Cruz, CA: A 49-year old man who suffered permanent brain damage as the result of police use of a taser, has won a $2.8 million settlement against Taser International Inc, the makers of the controversial stun gun.
In 2006, Steven Butler who was intoxicated and off his medications, refused to get off a bus he was riding. The Watsonville police tasered him in an effort to subdue him. However, Butler went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing for 18 minutes, before he was successfully resuscitated. As a result, he suffered irreversible brain damage, a loss of his motor skills, and a loss of mobility.
According to media reports, Butler's family will receive a portion of the settlement to pay the monthly health care bills of $4,700, which is the cost of his resulting round-the-clock-care.
