Crash Caused by Cell Phone Use Yields $14.4M Award
Brevard County, FL: A $14.4 million settlement has been awarded to the victim of head on car accident, allegedly caused by a driver who was using his cell phone at the time of the crash.
In 2007, Glen Kroeger, who was 50 at the time, was driving his van when he was struck by Christopher Bevis' vehicle head-on.
Kroeger suffered a fractured left humerus and crushed left ankle. He also suffered a traumatic brain injury, causing difficulties with recognition, speech and processing questions. He claimed he can no longer work and requires daily assistance. The court awarded Kroeger $10.4 million in damages and awarded his wife $4 million for loss of consortium.
Bevis was was convicted of reckless driving for using his phone while behind the wheel. He did not appear at the civil trial, and a default judgment was entered.
