$23 Million Verdict for Man Shot in Face
This is a settlement for the Personal Injury lawsuit.
Jackson, MS: A jury has awarded $23million as settlement of a lawsuit brought against the city of Jackson and a downtown hotel. The suit alleged that off-duty police officer Dewayne West shot an unarmed mentally ill man in the head at near point-range in 2007.
Dale Archey was just 24 when he was shot on April 13, 2007 by West who was working security for the Jackson Marriott. The jury assessed 30 percent of the blame to the city and 70 percent to the hotel.
Although Archey survived the shooting, he suffers long-term emotional damage, his attorney alleges. Archey has a history of paranoid schizophrenia. He is now institutionalized.
