Apple Wins $1B Patent Infringement Lawsuit
This is a settlement for the Trademark, Copyright, Patent lawsuit.
San Jose, CA: After three days of deliberation, a jury found Samsung Electronics Co., one of the world' largest electronics companies, guilty of patent infringement and awarded Apple Inc. $1 billion—one of the largest ever patent awards. The verdict said that Samsung violated a series of Apple's patents related to the software and design of mobile devices, including the physical design of the iPhone.
Samsung, in a countersuit, had asked for more than $422 million from Apple, arguing that Samsung' patents had been violated by Apple. But the nine jurors rejected all of Samsung' claims.
In its patent infringement lawsuit filed in April 2011, Apple demanded $2.5 billion from the South Korean company, which is currently the leading manufacturer of smartphones in the US. Samsung has sold 22.7 million smartphones and tablets that Apple claimed uses its technology. Apple attorney Harold McElhinny said those devices accounted for $8.16 billion in sales since June 2010.
The U.S. case is one of about 50 patent lawsuits involving telecommunications companies and the $219 billion market for computer tablets and smartphones.
