Optical Disc Drive Antitrust Class Action Settlement

This is a settlement for the Antitrust lawsuit.

Santa Clara, CA: Settlements have been reached in an antitrust class action lawsuit alleging a group of electronics companies conspired to fix the prices of optical disk drives. These devices enable data to be read from and/or written to optical disks, such as DVDs, CDs and other computer software storage.

The consolidated class action results from an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2009 into the optical disk drive industry. The class action lawsuits were consolidated in 2010.

In addition to data storage, optical disk drives are included in a variety of consumer electronic devices, including desktop and laptop computers, game consoles and camcorders. The settlements affect indirect purchasers of optical disk drives. A California federal judge approved $124.5 million worth of settlements in the case with Sony, Hitachi-LG Data Storage, Panasonic Corp., and NEC Corp, on July 21, 2016. Consumers covered by the optical disk drive settlements include residents in 23 states and the District of Columbia who bought optical disk drives from April 2003 to December 2008.

If you purchased a new computer with an internal ODD, a stand-alone ODD designed for internal use in a computer, or an ODD designed to be attached externally to a computer while a resident of Arizona, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wisconsin during the period of April 1, 2003 and December 31, 2008 for your own use and not for resale, you may be eligible for benefits from settlements reached in antitrust litigation currently pending in federal court. ODD refers to a DVD-RW, DVD-ROM, or COMBO drive manufactured by one or more Defendants or their alleged conspirators. For class members to ensure payment, you must file a claim online or by mail by July 1, 2017.

Purchases of Panasonic-brand computers are not covered by this class action settlement.
