UPDATE: AndroGel, Testim lawsuits continue as “low-T” studies reveal risks
The number of lawsuits facing testosterone therapy manufacturers continues to grow, as men who were prescribed AndroGel, Testim, Dep-Testosterone, Fortesta, Striant, Axiron and other "low-T" treatments claim to have suffered life-threatening testosterone side effects like strokes and heart attacks.
AndroGel and Testim specifically are facing more heat than ever, following a notice released earlier this year by the FDA alerting the public of its "low-T" safety review, which led to four lawsuits being filed against AndroGel on behalf of men who allegedly suffered strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and other complications due to using the medications.
A January 2014 study published by the Public Library of Science in conjunction with the University of Florida and the National Cancer Institute also shows a connection between testosterone therapy and cardiovascular disease, noting the increased risk of myocardial infarction shortly after beginning testosterone therapy in older men.
Made by AbbieVie, a subsidiary of Abbott Laboratories, AndroGel makes up about 80 percent of the testosterone therapy market and is the main drug under investigation.
Simultaneously, several lawsuits have been filed against Testim, manufactured by Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, for similar reasons. A lawsuit filed by a Jefferson Parish, Louisiana man last April claims he suffered multiple strokes as a result of both AndroGel and Testim testosterone therapy.
Both manufacturers have been accused of "disease mongering" by claimants who have alleged that the defendants' advertisements led them to believe they had low testosterone symptoms and misrepresented their products as safe, easy to use and free of serious side effects.
