The video above, which shows some broken Ford spark plugs–or more specifically, broken spark plugs from a 2004 Ford F150 Triton 5.4L V8–also shows what the recent Ford spark plug class action lawsuit is all about. A quick surf around the internet found that Ford owners who’ve had this problem have paid bills of a few hundred dollars to $750 to $4,500 and who knows how much more to get the spark plug problem fixed.
So what’s the deal with the Ford spark plug class action lawsuit? Here’s the lowdown…
The Ford spark plug lawsuit claims that spark plugs in certain Ford models break during replacement. As a result, broken pieces or fragments of the defective spark plugs get stuck in the cylinder head, which has led to expensive repair shop bills in order to remove the broken spark plug pieces and/or repair damage to engines. The Ford spark plug class action lawsuit is a defective product lawsuit.
Ford did issue a Technical Service Bulletin (08-7-6) in 2008 which provided instruction (11 pages!) on how to properly remove the spark plugs.
The “class” for this lawsuit would include owners of the following Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models:
Ford
Lincoln
Mercury

Wow. I was looking at a Chevy Colorado from one car lot, and was considering a 2006 Lincoln Mark from another. The guy who had the Chevy told me about the Ford spark plugs and I just figured he was playing mr. typical salesman. I loved the appearance of the Mark and was really leaning toward it. I do not want to deal with this BS though. It's too bad but I think i will have to pass on the Mark…
i have a 98 f150 with a 4.6 and the number 3 spark plug is seized in the hole and the plug had rounded off the hex of the plug im looking at 1500 to pull the head to get the plug out the mechanic said its common because of the water coming off of the fire wall and dripping in to the hole and it seizes the plug ive got one more thing to try before removing the head hope it comes out and can i get in the law suite
I have owned A 19 98 f 150 kept it for 12 years didn’t have one problem with the engine whatsoever. Gerald w. Franklin senior
If you can get the porcelain out you can use an easy out to remove it
If you can break the top of the plug you can use an easy out
we have always bought ford trucks but not until we bought our 2006 did we start having problems, our truck has been sitting in the driveway more then we have use it after having it in the shop for 7 days they finally agreed with me that it was the catalytic converters but now they are trying to tell me that this happened because the sparkplugs had not been changed we have had the truck for about 3 years and in that time I think we have put no more then 1500 miles on it, shouldn't they have changed the sparkplugs before they even resold it since the catalytic converter is still under warranty now they are trying to pressure me to get new sparkplugs with them at a price of 600 dollars.
I wonder if Ford has the same problem with a newer model?? I have a 2010 Ford Transit…it started missing…took it in to the dealership…I have an extended warrenty…have 51,000 miles on it… spark plug has siezed…really…said it corroded and ruined the coil, and is stuck in the head…cost…over $400 for parts,….and $2000.00 for labor…. is it covered by the warrenty… NO!!!! because everything was caused by the SPARK PLUG!!!! REALLY???? after researching some of these comments….seems like Ford has alot of explaining to do and paying up to a lot of people…. I called Ford Motor Co. and have a case number, so I will be calling them back today to see if I can make any "head"way with them……hmmm…any ideas out there? help!!!!!
I have two 2010 Ford Transits, both are fleet vehicles and both had the same spark plug issue in the same day, the spark plug blew out the coil… waiting to hear how much the repairs are from two different shops.
Did you get in on the suit my 2002 explorer just did the exact same thing
How does one get in on the class action lawsuit
I was a Ford tech for awhile. You can call your local snap on dealer and get the removal tool for about $70 it’s easy to use, if I remember correctly 5/8 for the tool that pushes the ceramic insert in (you can screw it in all the way and it won’t push the ceramic in the cylinder) and 7/16 for the threaded insert and 11/16 for the nut to pull the plug tip out. When I worked at Ford I only had the service writer charge an extra 0.2 hours per broken plug and I could do the whole job in under an hour. You want to open another can of worms look into exhaust leaks from broken manifold studs. Not only it’s it a safety issue it usually requires engine removal to remove the broken stud from the head.
I have a 2006 ford f150 xlt with the 5.4 triton motor started running poorly took it to a garage and he told me the number 3 cylinder is misfiring. Supposedely changed the ignition coil and spark plug, still running poorly. Took it to another garage they said I need to replace all the ignition coils Approx. $500 for that. Estimate to change plugs $500. I called the local Ford dealership and they said the plugs breaking off is a common issue, they wanted $580 to change the plugs and an additional $56 for each plug that broke off. So the Ford trained mechanics aren't even sure they can do the job correctly and FORD refuses to acknowledge their failure in design. I've driven Fords for 30 years and this will be my last. Thanks for standing behind your product………
I have a 2006 Ford F150 . The truck runs great but when I went to change the plugs at 100,000 miles 6 broke off at the dealer. I was charged 670.00 for the repair job. I would like to know if I can get in on this class action suit, or if there is a recall.

I have a ford f150. Just recently hit 100000 miles so I had the spark plugs changed. 6 of them broke off and my bill was 670 dollars. I would like to be part of the class action suit. How do I do this?
i have a 2004 ford f150 with the 5.4l every one of my spark plugs broke. How can i be a part of this????
I have a 2004 E 350 with 5.4 ltre motor have 100100 miles on it looking to change plugs or should i leave them in till i start having problems I love my van been a FORD man all my life and would'nt have it any other way! problems exist with all vehicles we just need to come up with solution to plug situation.
If it isn’t broken, leave it as it is.
I am sick and tired of replacing coils, especially when it rains.. Ford knew what they were doing when they manufactured these trucks! I can't keep paying truck notes and repairs… Deirdre Boykin Louisville, Alabama.. HELP!!!!! FORD……. Found… on…. road…. dead. that's what ford means.
I have a 2006 f150 5.4 changed plugs at 45,oookm and broke four i new ford had a problem and decided to change them early guess what didn't work. I used an epoxy kit to pull out the porcelain then the lisle tool will work easy nothing will go in the cylinder the epoxy kit and lisle kit work good together but you have to have patients BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO LET THE EPOXY SET FOR 1 HOUR THIS KIT I THINK IS FROM KD TOOLS BUT I BOUGHT IT FROM SNAP ON.
I have a 2004 5.4 Triton engine in a f150. I love the truck but am having the same problems. What the H— is wrong with Ford. Their advertisments are a lie. If we, as consumers, pay for a product, we should be legally guaranteed that the product is as advertised. If not, Ford should face up to their goofball designs and take care of it. I will never buy another FORD. I am tired of second rate designs that cost the american public tons of money that can not afford. They should go into politics. At least there we know we are going to get screwed ahead of time.
yeah I took care of my 05 f250 sd 5.4 3v….for what?
I babied this truck and after almost 9 years…..the gas mileage sucks 9 city-12 hwy the cam phasers have been ticking away since 36 k…..and I was going to fix the plugs now@ 58 k , hoping they would come out??? Then I can do the cam phasers for another $ 1500-2k…..and then those faulty clutch fans that over work the water pump.
Instead Im trading it in for a Gmc……
Ford effed me on a $40 k truck…period!
Actually ,…they effed themselves,…that was the last ford Ill ever own.
Ford , you truly disgust me , so bad that Id jump ship to gmc……. at least they stand behind their junk !
I have 07 ford fx2 with the 5.4 triton,I have 102k miles on it, it cuts out while going up hill, and now misfiring so bad truck went into limp mode… I have bought ford my entire life. This will be the last. It's crazy that I cannot even do a simple spark plug change without fear of breaking them due to a faulty design,, and the price of replacement plugs are outrageous ,,,, ford should of stepped up ,,, at least Chevy has a 100k warranty, ford is still behind ,,,,,
I have a 2005 Expedition. I have had it for 6 yrs. I had to refinance it and I am still paying on it. Since last Summer I have paid 3200.00 and it is still not running right. I recently paid Ford almost 900.oo to change 2 spark plugs and 2 coils because it is skipping and jerking. It stopped and was running good for about 4 months. Now it is skipping and jerking once again. I have to get my tag and now it wont pass imitions. They no this is a problem it should be recalled. Can I still join in on the lawsuit?
These complaints are old but I have an 08 expedition that just hit 110K miles and took it to my dealership (Tom Smith ford in Lillington NC) and they pulled the plugs without breaking them and replaced them for a hair over $200. I am so happy with my expedition. Maybe those complaining should have taken it to the dealer and not done it themselves. They would have saved themselves a hell of a lot of hassle.
I think your full of sh*t! The plugs alone cost $90.00. Ford dealers charge $50.00 just to open the hood. What are you a Ford Salesman?
1300$ at my Ford dealer to change 8 plugs and 1 COP . Ridiculous.
It’s changing plugs shouldn’t need to take to dealer unless u r totally useless n besides even dealers tell you this is a major problem so ford should come good for it. So u keep being a useless faithfull ford boy n don’t bitch when it cost u cash
hi Iam Dave recently my two vans went down,I Purchased a 2006 Ford Expedition
Iam a Disabled Vet,first day in owning this vehichle I took it to our local mechanic

Do you believe God will stand by while all these folks are suffering due to your lack
in Engineering,Iam the wrong Man for Ford to Screw around with,Please lets shake up
this process We are the People of the USA.
I have a 2005 F-150 that's been sitting in the garage for almost 2 years with a broken spark plug. Ford Dealership said they guaranteed they could get it out. After paying them $99 they told me they couldn't get it out and they could either remove the head for $5k or put a new engine in for $6500. The older Ford's that had the spark plugs blow out was due to not having enough thread counts and the broken spark plug issue is their fix for the spark plug blowing out. I'm sure the idiot engineers that designed both of these have been promoted.
This is not good my ford f150 5.4 2005 truck is fuc.,.,.,.,,. Spark plugs ends r stuck tried to get one out no good this is not right ar all I thougt it was just me but I see its not
Just got back from my friend Freddys house.2004 f250 90k blew out third plug back on drivers side. I own a 2007 Nav with 80k. holding my breath. Also own 2003 expedition 5.4 w/ 190k changed plugs twice also own 1999 f150 170k that two has three plug changes on it no problems. 2nd plug swap on 2003 expedition noticed hard removing so i retightened and loosened numerous times to free up carbon build up on several plugs. Ive been lucky but have a knot in my stomach every road trip thinking is today the day one pops. Shame on ford and dont expect any recall…… not safety related.
My 2000 ford f250 sdnot only blew spark plugs but fu@&ing lost oil pressure and exploded under pressure from the trailer and skidsteer I was pulling and thanks to a certain ford company that just sold out with there shitty repair im out on of best damn trucks I have ever owned im a ford blue blood through and through but I kinda lookin at a bowtie to help me out of the sit please help if u know any recalls to replace the problem
Got two f350 had this same issue with plugs blowing out both are triton moters one is a 2002 with a 5.4 other is a v-10 2000 model so ford needs to do something
Have a f250 2000 blew a plug two days ago . is the 2000 f250 included in the lawsuit ???
4th trip to dealer in 6 months going over 2000.00 mecanic actually said he never saw this before i
fix lasted 1 MILE blaming it on spark plug COILS going on second set of plugs i am one that keeps a vehicle new looking oil wash wax shined treated like a vehicle should be i will never buy anoth Ford anything and have owned a lot of them. I'd rather have a chevy or nisson! cant wait to hear the lie tomorrow .at service appt HA!
im pissing my pants on this spark plug job, I have a 2000 f150 5.4 ltr, shes running rough and scanner is showing number 3 cylinder not firing ?she has 230,000 , so plugs replace no big deal?? OMG im a b/c mechanic! damn rite ill be fixing my Nissan pickup before I start this job, I love my ford have loved all of them 10 fords in my life , this love story mite NOT have a happy ending, wish me luck?
I got 05 ,5.4 3v expdtn. 7 plugs out of 8 broke.,bought the plug extractor kit online for $65 bucks.heated the plugs one at the time using a blowdrier;and a bit of pb blaster .let rest overnight ;repited the next day.a bit of patience is a must ;if you rush you might break the extractor tool.follow the instructions correctly.vaccum the cylinders for small pieces of metal and ceramic might had fallen inside.use premium plugs n do not forget to use antizieze on the threads when put them back .this really sucks .but I really doudt it ford will agree to pay for they f…up.design .They also used two assemblers providers for the fuel inyectors assy. a Canadian and a American factory.that cost them $9000 to replace my engine at 10K miles.when the engine got hydrolock and bend tho pistons. So I know what really FORD stands:Forever On Repair diagnostic.I am filling for the lawsuit still. Good luck guys.Buy Imports instead.
My 2003 Expedition is not on the Class Action suit but should be. I've blown 3 plugs and the third plug just blew again and damaged the head beyond repair. It's going to cost me just as much to replace the heads as it's going to cost to drop in a new engine. I'm going to buy another car instead. I've had 3 Ford's I have to buy another car now. Thanks Ford.
JUST FOUND OUT ALL THIS BULL CRAP WITH FORD'S MESS UP, MY 1997 FORD WITH A 4.6 MOTOR SPIT A PLUG NOW I GOT TO GET THIS BULL FIXED BECAUSE OF FORD'S GREAT DESIGN, WHAT A WAY FOR FORD TO LAY OF THERE BULL WITH FORD CUSTOMER'S,GOT TO FIND OUT WHAT THE COST WILL BE, THANKS FOR THE HEAD ACHE
just a note. I have 2003 ford crown victoria police interceptor and I had my plugs replaced at a Ford dealership and the tech had no problem removing the old plugs. Since the tech was a friend of mine, he showed me the old plugs and found the old plugs in decent condition at 106,000. Does anybody out there have any issues with CVPI plugs ?
Ford's are great looking but a mechanics nightmare. I would never own one.
My first ford and it had to be a fuckin lemon, this shit pisses me rite the fuckoff I broke 4 plugs, I have extracted two today, but the fucking part that broke off now has a broken guard off the shitty ass egineered peice of shit plug down in the hole which I have to extract with a vacuum or magnetic, u sumbitches should of had a bailout cause I pray your fucking company folds for your flagrant ass actions and lack of morels in this issue u are more worried about your pockets loaded with profit, fuck u ford. I am done with your highway robbery greed.
2006F150 5.4 …….To bad for me ! This is beyond ridiculous. $ 1300 at my Ford dealer to change 8 plugs ???!!! Yep . They broke one. Guess the tech bulletin is to technical. I gotta get rid of this truck fast. No more Fraud …….I mean Ford junk for me.
Same issue…2007 mercury mountaineer having misfire issue. No mechanic wants to touch it. Dealer wants to change $860-900 for a tune up to change spark plugs
I had to pay 1200.00 dollars to have these spark plugs changed and now lost serious fuel mileage because of it. I too will look at other name vehicles ? Ford along with the others should be fined for such mistakes and forced to fix the screws up. Gmc did the same thing on their 1999 yukons except that it was welding the cams in place for mass production purposes to align the vehicle. It cost me the consumer 700.00 to get my vehicle aligned which was the cost to remove the cams for proper alignment. I spoke with the head person at Gmc and that is what I was told. Needless to say I don't buy Gmc products anymore and I'm sure they don't feel the pinch of my.no business and my heart and prayers go out to everyone who fell short and victim to gmc last screws up but I guess it's God's way of letting them pay for their greediness. And yes that's what those people died for was greediness on gmc behalf. I hope they are happy with there riches at the expense of all the families that lost a loved one. Gmc at least gets a second chance but not the families of the loved ones.
I own a 2006 Ford F 150 – to date it has cost me over $3000.00
getting the plugs changed in my vehicle
cant stop it from skiping on #1 sparkplug tried everything I mean everything
I bought a 2005 F150 3 weeks ago and the service dept at the dealership just told me they broke a plug and I may need to get a loner or rent a car because they can’t get the piece of plug out. The dealer had to know that this problem existed. There has to be some sort of relief.
I have a 2007 F-150 Harley-Davidson, I am a red seal heavy duty mach. 58 years old, my first car 1950 ford with flat head V8 next car was 1967 stationwagon 302 v8 then 1970 cougar 351 v8 always changed my own sparkplugs until my 07 f-150 took truck to Spruce Grove, AB. ford dealer $850 later to change 8 plugs. I thought the guy was joking with me, he was being truthful I was lucky I only had 6 that broke. Come on ford!!!! I will sell the truck before I do that again. Just to save face ford should change the first round of plugs for free but make sure they put on copper coat on the plugs so they don t lock in again. I also have a 2006 mustang gt conv. with only 25k on it. that will be sold in the spring. I hope I can get in on the law suit.
At 130,000 miles +/- I had a plug blow out of my 5.4 Triton engine in an E250 van which had been modified for towing a 7000 lb toybox. Instead of trying to buy a newer truck I had the $3K repair by putting inserts in the heads. The rest of the engine shows little wear and I felt the money was well spent. I am looking at buying a motor home and want to know if Ford ever fixed the problem. It was bad enough to get to the heads in a V8 van and I am sure a V10 in a Class A motor home would cost at least twice as much to fix –if it could be done at all. The English had this figured out decades ago and put bronze inserts in their motorcycles with alloy heads–not only that they were 3/4″ reach plugs.
I have a 2002 Ford explorer, in 2013 the ford had 105,000 miles, that’s when the problems started. I had two events, twice during the year that two sparks blew out. In 2014 I had one event with the same issue. Now in 2015 again the same incident. This time the the threads are damaged and its useless. The mechanic are indicating l have to change the head.
I changed spark plugs in my truck had to take it to a machanic becouse spark plug broke in side cylender he was a friend so did not charge me but on frount spark plug i have water in my cylinder and have to put a gaskett kit in or craked head
Blown five plugs so far, this sux❗
remedy: from time to time, have your plugs checked for tightness. Do you can it yourself by using a plug sock and if you feel they are loose, just tighten them. It better than forking over $1000.00 to say the least.
I have a 2006 Ford F150 spark plugs break off and I had to buy a spark plug tool. Ford should recall this problem before Ford ends up out of business. Wrong of mouth and reviews are very effective. Never again will I buy a Ford product.
I am having both sides of my 2003 F-250 5.4L, SOHC 2V engine’s cylinder heads pulled over at the shop because of this now!
I am kinda sick and tired of being taken by large companies, after you have owned many of their products, to get this slap in the face.
This is my sixth Ford car or truck and to get slaughtered with this repair bill, because of their negligence is outrageous. What are you going to do to help me out with this?
Sorry your having problems with this I also have a super duty with the same problem. Don’t let them push you around. There is a special tool that gets the peaces out only takes a minute
Spark plugs break when taken out and it cost $ to get them fixed. Badd, Bad 2006 F150 Ford truck
Sorry you guys have had so many problems. I am 65 years old and just a shade tree mechanic but I changed the plugs in my 2007 F150 Harley edition with no issues at 39,000 miles and did not break any getting them out. I changed them because I found most articles said they would not last much more than 30,000 and my truck had suddenly stopped taking gas when I poked it! Later took it to the Ford dealer when the plugs did not fix the issue and he replaced the cat converters (under warranty thank goodness). Only issue I have now is poor gas milage – 11mpg around town! I do have the supercharged 5.4 but try not to poke it too often.
I have 52 000 on mine now. I have #1 plug misfiring. I`m hoping I don`t have an issue changing them. Any other plugs that are better for replacement than the motorcraft?
I spent 3000.00 to get my 8 plug’s removed and didn’t even have to take my pan,s down. This is a ford issue and nobody’s else.
I have a Ford Expedition with only 52k miles and has been so well taken care of that it looks like a new truck. I have a #1 plug misfiring. My neighbor is a Ford mechanic. He told me they have been a problem with that, and Ford refuses to let them use the Champion plugs because they are not Motorcraft. For the cost of these vehicles this is crazy. Ford needs to be held accountable and pay this money back. I`m going to try to do this myself. I`m hoping that I don`t encounter the same issues. I am contemplating using Motorcraft plugs.
I have an 05 mustang g t with the4.6 I changed the plugs using the newer E3 spark plugs they look like a better made 3piease plug that might not break when removeing I know the motor ran a lot better with them o rielys auto parts has the plug check one out
