If it’s Tuesday, it must be time for a Lilo update! For those of you who do not follow TMZ on a regular basis—that would include me—Lilo is shorthand for Lindsay Lohan—God forbid we should use full names. (I wonder what birth certificates will read like in 10 years time or less). I digress.
So Lilo (which could read as Lie Low—a cryptic source of good advice that has clearly not met with success) is, as predicted in my blog last week, remaining front and center in mainstream media during her incarceration at the infamous Lynwood Correctional Facility.
The Lynwood facility has a couple of claims to fame, as it turns out, the first being that it’s housed celebutantes Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie and others, for similar convictions that basically involve too much alcohol, reckless driving, skipping rehab, blah, blah, blah…we all know the script.
But the jail’s second claim to fame is that it is involved in a class action lawsuit over allegations that prison staff illegally strip searched female inmates, strip and body cavity searches actually. Interestingly, a similar lawsuit was recently settled in favor of the plaintiffs, in Franklin County, MA.
According to TMZ, the Lynwood suit alleges that the “female inmates are strip searched in plain view of each other in a parking lot that is neither private nor sanitary.”
So, as one would expect but could never predict, “Attorneys for the plaintiffs filed a request in Federal Court on Monday to take Lilo’s deposition while she’s behind bars. They also sent a letter to Lohan’s attorney Shawn Chapman Holley asking if Lindsay would agree to be deposed.” (TMZ.com).
Now, I can’t help wondering that if Lilo had been strip searched, there should be some sort of photographic evidence somewhere on the internet? Notwithstanding that if she was strip searched in a parking lot in plain view surely some enterprising paparazzi would have snapped a few pics for posterity—and his next year’s mortgage payments.
I think it’s a little odd that there are no visuals on this—at least so far—given that even Ms. Lohan’s arriving at jail was considered news worthy enough for a live video feed. And, there doesn’t appear to be much info on the actual lawsuit either.
But—there’s a lot of digital ink being generated over this, and one might hope that it will bring attention to the plight of prisoners facing similar or worse human rights infractions around the country.
Prisoners like those in the Lake County Jail in Indiana who recently had their class action certified. They are alleging poor living conditions which include not being supplied with any hygiene products while they were incarcerated, fighting for food, and sleeping in their own urine because the toilets were broken. In fact conditions are reportedly so bad, that a recent report done specifically on that facility cited five suicides inside the jail, and problems with how medications were distributed. And those are just a fraction of the 80 problems the report addressed.
Given all this, it sounds like Lilo may have a lot to be thankful for.
While I agree that Lindsay should be punished for her obvious disregard for the law, I think it is also clear that she is someone with drug and alcohol abuse issues and needs some serious treatment. I think in this case there should be more focus on reform for her – she has been clearly out of control for a long time and is quickly heading for death. Would be a shame and waste of a young life. Drug dependency is a serious problem beyond the control and power of the sufferer
Anyway I was there 2 I want my money… and I want it now. All of it.
