Papillon Airways Inc. and Eurocopter
On August 10, 2001, experienced pilot, Kevin Innocenti, took six people on a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. A fire broke out in the passenger cabin and the helicopter crashed, killing 6 of the 7 people aboard. Shiya Lichtenstein, Avi and Barbara Wajsbaum, Aryeh Zvi Fastag, and Innocenti were all killed. Chana Daskal was the only survivor; she lost her husband David in the accident as well. Chana suffered burn injuries to 80% of her body. She broke her back and lost both of her legs and ears. Since the crash Chana has gone through more than 40 facial reconstruction surgeries and skin grafts. A lawsuit was filed on behalf of Chana and her two children against the helicopter's manufacturer, Eurocopter, and the operator, Papillon Airways Inc. The lawsuit claimed there was a malfunction in the helicopter's hydraulic system and a faulty fuel tank design. Chana Daskal is set to receive a $38 million settlement, one of the largest pretrial personal injury settlements for an individual in U.S. history. (Dec-17-05)
