Cataracts Linked To Lead
Cataracts are cloudy areas that occur inside the lense of the eye. Over the years, a number of risk factors were discovered that seemed to be linked to the occurrence of cataracts. Some of these factors are Diabetes, smoking, excessive exposure to bright sunlight, and advancing age.
A recent study has discovered a statistical correlation between long term exposure to lead, as measured by the level of lead contained in the shin bones of almost 800 subjects, aged 60 or older. The subjects with the hightest levels of lead were 2.7 times more likely to have developed cataracts.
Lead has been removed from many consumer products in recent years, the largest being gasoline and paint, and warnings are now required on many products containing lead, warning of hypertension, dementia, arrested development and other dangers that have been linked to the heavy metal. This is the first study to find a link to cataracts.
If you have been exposed to lead in the course of your life and are suffering from cataracts, you may be entitled to compensation.
