Hip and Knee Replacements Becoming More Common

. By Charles Benson

The number of hip and knee replacements is rapidly increasing as the baby-boomer generation inches toward the age for retirement and the obesity rate continues to sit near 33 percent, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, knee replacements, which are the most common form of joint replacement, are expected to increase by more than 600 percent by 2030.

In total, hip and knee replacement surgeries totaled more than one million in the US in 2008. Similarly, the rate of less common joint replacement surgeries such as those involving the shoulder and ankle is rising, thanks in large part to improvements in technology, according to Dr. Wael Barsoum of the Cleveland Clinic.

According to its Web site, the Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center that was founded by physicians in 1921.

Such knee and hip replacements are increasing even despite recent device recalls—including that of DePuy hip implants—which have resulted in a number of lawsuits across the US and Canada.
