The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit against the school on behalf of its former dean of admissions, Marla Sexson. The lawsuit claimed the private Roman Catholic school violated Kansas state laws by refusing to promote Sexson to supervisor due to her female gender. The lawsuit also alleged the university retaliated against Sexson when she complained about the discrimination. Newman University has agreed to pay a $182,500 settlement for gender discrimination.
