Vincent Lewis filed a federal lawsuit against the city claiming he was unfairly passed over for promotion to sergeant due to his race. As a police officer, Lewis had applied for sergeant every year between 1996 and 2003. He alleged he was passed over for white officers who were as qualified if not less qualified. Lewis was promoted to sergeant and awarded a $225,000 racial discrimination settlement. (May-21-06) [TENNESSEAN]
