LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION

Province of Nova Scotia

In the 1960s and 1970s, youth jail workers at the Shelburne centre and the Nova Scotia School for Girls in Truro, Nova Scotia, were accused of physical and sexual abuse by inmates, although claims surfaced in the 1990s. Some of the 79 aging former staff lost their jobs, became ill from stress and two workers committed suicide.

A lawsuit was filed against the Nova Scotia government by former workers at the centre and school, where more than 800 people were affected by unproven allegations. Three former employees from the two facilities were convicted of abuse.

The $7.5 million settlement with the Nova Scotia government includes $5.5 million in general damages, $200,000 in special damages and $330,000 to the core group of workers who pursued the litigation. About $1 million will cover the cost of the employees' legal fees and about $525,000 will cover unpaid pensions. (Jun-06-06) [CTV NEWS]
