Garvey Marine Co.
Chicago - On April 10, 2003 bridge inspector Evan Buckhouse was inspecting the underside of the Division Street Bridge when a barge struck the machinery supporting him. He was thrown into the Cal Sag Channel and drowned. Buckhouse's family filed a lawsuit alleging Garvey Marine failed to keep a proper lookout when pushing the barge. In addition, the lawsuit claimed the vessel crew failed to rescue Bunkhouse from the channel. Circuit Court of Cook County settled the wrongful death case for over $4.5 million.
Buckhouse' employer, Collins Engineers of Chicago, also settled with Buckhouse for not providing a safety vest or rescue boat in the water below the bridge as required by OSHA. Equipment Rental Company also settled for failing to provide an under bridge inspection device and operator at the time of the occurrence. (Sep-28-06) [US NEWSWIRE: DROWNING]
