LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Quietflex Manufacturing Co.
Houston, TX: A lawsuit was filed by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against Quietflex Manufacturing Co. in January 2000 when the Hispanic workers walked off the job at the Houston air-conditioning duct maker.
An investigation revealed that dozens of Hispanic workers were discriminated against, segregated into lower-paying, less desirable jobs, denied transfers to better jobs, and were required to speak and read English for promotions. After settlement negotiations between the EEOC and Quietflex broke down, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund sued the company on behalf of the employees. A year later, in 2002, the EEOC joined the case. Quietflex Manufacturing Co. has agreed to pay $2.8 million to 78 current and former Hispanic employees to settle the dispute though not admitting to any wrongdoing.
