Allstate Insurance Co.

Reading, PA: When she was fired May 7, 2002, the Philadelphia office of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed the lawsuit on behalf of Joyce Johnson-Clayter, 50, of Reading, PA. When African American Johnson-Clayter was working as a customer service representative at Encompass Insurance, a division of Allstate, her lawsuit claimed that her supervisor scrutinized her performance, criticized her work, made daily threats to fire her, and restricted her lunch schedule while treating white co-workers more favorably.

Allstate Insurance has agreed to pay $115,000 to settle the racial discrimination lawsuit. Allstate, with headquarters in Northbrook, is required to post a notice about the settlement in its offices for 18 months to ensure that the company's complaint procedures are clear and take action if an employee violates the company's equal employment opportunity policies.
