Collingswood High School
Daniel Curcio, a former high school Spanish teacher at Collingswood High School filed a federal lawsuit in 2004, saying the school board violated New Jersey antidiscrimination laws and the federal Family and Medical Leave Act. Curcio claimed he was discriminated against on admission of his sexual orientation and verbally harassed by colleagues. In November 2002, Curcio began experiencing panic attacks, which he attributed to the resulting stress of the situation. On taking medical leave and returning with a Doctors note, he was denied return to work without being examined by a doctor and a psychiatrist of the school's choosing.
The lawsuit said requiring Curcio to undergo a fitness evaluation violated the Family and Medical Leave Act. The Collingswood school board agreed to pay $270,000 in damages and compensation. Lisa Grosskreutz, an attorney for the school board, said the settlement was offered to avoid the uncertainty and costs of trial. She said the school board denies wrongdoing.
