Target Corp.
Minneapolis, MN: Minneapolis-based Target Corp. agreed to pay $775,000 to a group of black store workers in Pennsylvania to settle a racial discrimination and retaliation case. The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed the lawsuit in September 2005 on behalf of former employee Michael Hill and 13 other black employees of a Springfield, PA, store. The EEOC charged in its lawsuit that Hill, then in training to become a store manager in Springfield, and others were subjected to racial harassment by a white store manager, whom they reported for unlawful conduct. Hill ultimately left the job because of the negative health effects of the discrimination and the lack of effective response to his internal complaints. The EEOC alleged his resignation was forced upon him, amounting to a constructive discharge. Hill received $275,000 of the settlement and the rest will be divided among the 13 others. (Jan-27-07)
