Melard Manufacturing Employees
Passaic, NJ: (Mar-21-07) Amanda Jaramillo, an employee of Melard Manufacturing for 30 years, was laid off along with 111 others when the company closed. Many of the workers, including Jaramillo, filed workers' compensation claims. In a countersuit, Bath Unlimited, a Randolph company that does business as Melard, sued more than 80 workers and a law firm representing them. The racketeering suit, filed under the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, accused the group of conspiring to defraud Bath by making false injury claims. A settlement approved by a US District Judge ordered Jaramillo and 83 former co-workers to repay Bath Unlimited's attorney fees, costs and compensatory damages adding up to $2.26 million.
