Ponte Vedra, FL
Ponte Vedra, FL: (May-07-07) Former director of the Ponte Vedra Beach branch library, Mary Thomas, filed charges against St. Johns County over the wrongful termination of her post at the county. The suit claimed that County Library Director Mary Jane Little, came to the Ponte Vedra Beach library and used her position of authority to get employees to sign a petition to put former County Commissioner Karen Stern on the ballot for re-election. A subsequent Florida Division of Elections complaint was dropped due to a lack of evidence. County officials reprimanded Little, but she remained in her position. In December 2006, Thomas took a leave of absence. In her place, Dan Markus, the manager of the Bartram Trail branch library, filled in the interim position. In February 2007, the county offered Thomas the position of branch manager at the main county library in St. Augustine. In April 2007, the suit claimed that the county had hired a permanent replacement at the Ponte Vedra Beach library, replacing Thomas, without any cause. In a settlement reached, St. Johns County commissioners agreed to pay Thomas $58,549 as compensation for the wrongful termination.
