LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Billings, MT
Billings, MT: (May-17-07) William A. D'Alton, a Billings lawyer, filed suit against the city, claiming that he was harassed and defamed by city employees. The nearly four-year-old lawsuit, which involved 10 parties, numerous claims and seven law firms, racked up hefty costs. While a current figure was not available, the city's insurance companies had spent more than $1.4 million as of last fall on legal fees. In a recent settlement reached, US Magistrate Judge Carolyn Ostby signed an order dismissing the lawsuit with prejudice, which means D'Alton can't refile the case. The order also directs each side to pay its own fees and costs. D'Alton, who sued the city for $2.4 million, was given $250,000, ending the suit. The settlement agreement directed the city's insurance company, Kemper Insurance, to pay D'Alton $250,000. Neither side admitted liability or wrongdoing.
