Turner Broadcasting System
San Francisco, CA: (May-18-07) The city of San Francisco filed charges against Turner Broadcasting System over a guerrilla ad campaign that sparked bomb scares in Boston. TBS hired a company to promote its "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" cartoon show in January. The company placed about 20 battery-powered signs around San Francisco with images of a cartoon character making an obscene gesture. A simultaneous promotion in Boston closed down roads, bridges and subway lines when residents and city officials mistook the signs for possible bombs. In a settlement reached with Boston, TBS paid $2 million and two men who installed the signs agreed to perform community service to avoid criminal charges. In a recent settlement with San Francisco, TBS had a more modest payout of $85,000. Though TBS entered into settlement agreements, it did so, without admitting any wrongdoing.
