University of California

Oakland, CA: (May-22-07) Following a lawsuit filed against the University of California, Berkeley campus, UC and union officials announced a contract settlement that raised the salaries of custodians. The settlement came after 18 months of bargaining that included boycotts of the University of California, Berkeley campus by speakers including actor Danny Glover and politicians. The deal between the University of California and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees gives the university's lowest paid employees, custodians, a $1.75 an hour pay raise at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Santa Barbara. Lower paid employees at other campuses will receive varying amounts. Much of the pay raise is retroactive to April 1, 2007. The university's original offer was 20 cents an hour. The more than $8 million cost of the pay raises has been in the university's budget since 2006, but has taken a year to be implemented. The university said the pay raises affect nearly 3,000 custodians. Custodians at Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and Santa Barbara will receive a $1.25 hour wage hike, back dated to April 1, 2007 plus another 50 cents an hour on Oct. 1, 2007. Custodians at other campuses, except UCSF Medical Center, will receive a 50 cent an hour wage hike. Other AFSCME-represented employees making less than $30,000 annually will get a 2 percent raise, employees earning up to $34,999 will get 1 percent and workers earning over $35,000 will receive 0.5 percent.
