LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Mineral County, WV
Keyser, WV: (May-24-07) Debra Weasenforth, former deputy clerk with the county, filed a civil lawsuit against Mineral County Clerk Isaac "Sonny" Alt, alleging she suffered sexual harassment from him that was clearly wrong, illegal, and constituted malfeasance in office. When Weasenforth filed the subsequent civil lawsuit in June 2006, she named Alt, both as the county clerk at the time and as a private individual, and the county commission, as her employers.
According to the suit, she charged that the commissioners took no action to curtail Alt's behavior, even though she complained to them "on at least 10 or more occasions" between March 22 and July 6, 2005. In a settlement reached, the Mineral County Commission agreed to pay Weasenforth $40,000 in order to resolve the sexual harassment claims. On March 29, 2007, Weasenforth's attorney, filed a motion to dismiss the case against the commission, and Weasenforth presented the commissioners with a signed statement absolving them from any blame in the matter.
