Van Buren School District
Van Buren County, AR: (Jun-05-07) Van Buren School District (VBSD) junior high school teacher and coach Steve Jones filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the school district, after he was terminated for leaving a teacher's meeting early. Jones claimed that he was singled out and treated shabbily, owing to the personal vendetta of certain board members.
In a settlement reached, Jones will receive $275,000 paid over three years; have his retirement brought up to date and his attorney's fees paid. As part of the settlement agreement, Jones will reimburse the Teacher Retirement System required in connection with payments received since his termination and will resign his employment with VBSD effective at the end of the 2006-2007 school term. The district further agreed to a $50,000 payout to cover legal fees. [PRESS ARGUS: TEACHER FIRED]
