Urbana, IL

Urbana, IL: (Jun-12-07) Former Urbana Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Walden brought a complaint against the city after his services were terminated, requesting that he be paid compensation for leave earned. Walden said he did not miss many days of work during his 30-year career with the city of Urbana. Walden, 51, was placed on paid administrative leave on April 30 by Mayor Laurel Prussing. Walden continued to be paid by the city through June 30, 2007. Prussing said at the time that she would not be reappointing Walden to another one-year term as the city's top administrator when the city's new fiscal year starts, on July 1. Walden had been chief administrative officer since July 1991. Prussing did not give a public explanation for Walden's termination, saying it was a personnel matter.

In a settlement reached, the city council gave tentative approval to an ordinance revising the annual budget to pay Walden nearly $64,000 in unused sick leave and vacation pay. Officials claimed that Walden will be compensated for 40% of the unused sick leave he accrued during his career at Urbana and for all of his unused vacation time. He will also receive another 10% of his accrued sick leave paid into his retirement health savings account. That money can not be used until he retires and can only be used for health care costs.
