LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Lansing, MI
Lansing, MI: (Jul-03-07) Lakiesha Allen, 28, filed a discrimination lawsuit against the city, claiming that she worked in a racially hostile environment. The suit alleged that Allen's supervisors discriminated against her by disciplining her more harshly than her white co-workers while she was employed as a jail detention officer. Allen, who is black, said the more she complained about her work environment, the more her superiors retaliated. Allen was part of a group of seven minority officers who sued the city in 2004, claiming racial disparities within the police department. The American Civil Liberties Union initially represented the officers, but backed out after it said the department took proper steps to resolve the issues. Though the city and its police department did not acknowledge wrongdoing, but agreed to pay Allen $170,000 to resolve the suit. Allen, whose employment was terminated in September 2006, said her three-year involvement with the case has taken an emotional toll and left her unemployed.
