Missouri State University
Springfield, MO: (Jul-10-07) Missouri State University (MSU) reached severance settlements with two employees within a three-week period. In addition to the checks written to Michael Hendrix and Katie Abrahamson-Henderson, MSU has agreed to seven other such employee buyouts in the past five years. The university's human resources department reports an average of 63 faculty leave each year through retirement or resignation. An average of less than two a year, are offered buyouts. The university has paid almost $700,000 for the nine to leave, although the two recent buyouts of Hendrix and Abrahamson-Henderson amount to more than half of the total.
In March 2006, the settlement reached between Hendrix and MSU resulted in the college paying him more than $173,000 to leave the school after he was identified as a registered sex offender and circumstances arose that made it impossible for him to continue his work. The agreement reached between MSU and Abrahamson-Henderson was larger; she received more than $257,000 when she resigned with two years remaining on her contract with the university.
