Barbosa Cabinets Inc.

Tracy, CA: (Jul-13-07) The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) filed charges against Tracy-based Barbosa Cabinets Inc., claiming that the facility violated federal law by improperly handling hazardous waste materials. An investigation conducted by the EPA in May 2006 revealed that Barbosa Cabinets, at 2020 E. Grant Line Road, was not handling rags containing acetone as hazardous waste, a violation that caused hazardous waste to be treated as municipal waste. Municipal waste landfills are not equipped to handle these types of materials. EPA inspectors said they found the Barbosa facility did not have a hazardous waste training program and did not file a biennial report for tracking generation, shipment and receipt of hazardous waste. The facility's hazardous waste is generated from solvent-based finishes and acetone used to clean equipment used to apply finishes to cabinetry, according to EPA officials. In a settlement reached, the facility agreed to a $32,200 payout and ensures proper storage and management of hazardous waste in the future. [TRACY PRESS: ACETONE RAGS]
