LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Redondo Beach, CA
Redondo Beach, CA: (Jul-14-07) Jo Ellen Latham, a former Redondo Beach Police identification expert, filed a disability discrimination lawsuit against the city after she was discriminated against her based on age, gender, and disability. She alleged that the city failed to accommodate her disability, engaged in harassment based upon a disability, and discriminated against her based on age, gender, and disability. Latham claimed that she was wrongfully terminated in Januaryv2004 after 14 years with the city. She had been on disability leave for 15 months for a herniated disc in her neck, caused by her leaning over antiquated magnifying equipment.
In a settlement reached, she agreed to a $140,000 payout from the city. Latham's attorney had asked the jury for about $1.3 million in damages. The settlement, formalized in June 2007, releases the city from any further claims by Latham. The settlement also states that the city denies violating the law or its own policies and that both parties agreed to the settlement agreement in order to circumvent the costs of protracted litigation.
