Minnesota Department of Transportation
Bloomington, MN: (Jul-17-07) Paul Stanton filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), alleging that MnDOT's affirmative action officer refused to select a white man for the job. Stanton said that MnDOT's chief pilot, Tim Valento, had hired him in March 2006 and even had given him his flight schedule. But the suit says Valento abruptly called back and withdrew the offer, saying MnDOT had to hire someone from a "protected class," such as a woman or member of a minority group. Stanton, 62, is a retired investigator for the Hennepin County attorney's office who was a fill-in pilot for MnDOT for more than 10 years. He scored the highest of all applicants on an aptitude test for the full-time job.
In a settlement reached, MnDOT agreed to hire Stanton as a full-time pilot and paying him $110,000. The $110,000 up-front payment is in lieu of wage and non-wage damages and legal expenses. Stanton is a Vietnam veteran and older than 40, giving him similar class protections against employment discrimination. [STAR TRIBUNE: PILOT DISCRIMINATION]
