Zale Corp.
Anchorage, AK: (Jul-26-07) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission brought charges against Zale Corp., the nation's largest specialty jewelry dealer, alleging that it discriminated against a pregnant employee. The case was filed by the commission on behalf of Christina Kantarzis, an expectant mother who worked at the Anchorage store. The suit stated that Kantarzis, a pregnant worker, suffered discrimination by a male manager at the company's store, when he refused to promote her, despite her extensive experience with the company.
In a settlement reached, Zale agreed to pay Kantarzis $55,000. The jewelry dealer has also agreed to train managers and supervisors about discrimination and provide information to the commission about its handling of sex and pregnancy discrimination complaints for two years.
